About VideoReducer

Our Mission
VideoReducer.com was created with a simple mission: to provide a free, fast, and 100% private video compression tool that anyone can use without worrying about their data being uploaded to a server. We believe that video compression is a basic digital need — whether you are sharing a video on Discord, sending it via email, or uploading it to social media — and it should not require giving up your privacy or paying for a subscription.
Unlike most online video compressors that upload your files to their servers for processing, VideoReducer runs entirely in your browser using WebAssembly and the WebCodecs API. Your video files never leave your device. This is not just a feature — it is the core principle of our product.
Who Built This Tool
VideoReducer.com is developed and maintained by an independent developer with over 10 years of experience in web development, video processing, and multimedia engineering. The project started as a personal solution to a recurring problem: every time we needed to compress a video for Discord or email, we had to either install heavy desktop software like HandBrake or upload our personal videos to an unknown server. Neither option was acceptable.
So we built VideoReducer — a tool that combines the power of FFmpeg (compiled to WebAssembly) with modern browser APIs like WebCodecs for GPU acceleration. The result is a video compressor that is as powerful as desktop software, as convenient as a web app, and as private as offline processing.
Our Technical Expertise
How We Use This Tool Ourselves
We do not just build this tool — we use it every day. Here are some real scenarios where VideoReducer saves us time:
- Compressing screen recordings for bug reports: A 500MB screen recording is compressed to under 25MB for email attachments, using the Auto mode with a 25MB target.
- Sharing gameplay clips on Discord: A 2-minute 4K gameplay clip is compressed to under 100MB for Discord Nitro, using the Quick mode with Best Balance preset.
- Reducing iPhone videos for WhatsApp: A 200MB iPhone video is compressed to under 16MB for WhatsApp, using the Auto mode with a 16MB target.
- Converting MKV to MP4: An MKV file that would not play on certain devices is converted to MP4 with H.264 encoding while simultaneously reducing file size by 60%.
- Trimming and compressing webinars: A 1-hour webinar recording is trimmed to the key 15-minute segment and compressed by 80%, all in the browser without uploading the full video.
Transparency & Accountability
We believe in complete transparency. Here is what you should know about VideoReducer:
- No server-side processing: All video compression happens in your browser. We do not have servers that process or store your videos.
- No user accounts: We do not require registration, and we do not collect personal information. We use Plausible Analytics (a privacy-friendly, cookie-free analytics tool) to understand aggregate traffic patterns.
- Open technology: Our compression engine is built on FFmpeg (the industry-standard open-source multimedia framework) and the WebCodecs API (a W3C standard). We do not use proprietary or closed-source encoding technology.
- No ads or watermarks: VideoReducer is completely free. We do not add watermarks to your videos, and we do not display misleading download buttons or pop-up ads.
- Open source components: Our tool uses open-source libraries including FFmpeg, Next.js, React, and Tailwind CSS. We contribute back to the community by sharing our technical implementations.
