Codec Selection
The codec is the most important compression setting. H.264 (AVC) is the recommended codec for maximum compatibility — it's supported by virtually all devices, browsers, and platforms. H.265 (HEVC) offers 25-50% better compression than H.264 but has limited browser support. VP9 is used in WebM and offers good compression for web use. Our tool defaults to H.264.
CRF (Constant Rate Factor)
CRF is the quality setting for H.264 encoding, ranging from 0 (lossless) to 51 (worst quality). Recommended CRF values: 18 (visually lossless, large files), 20 (excellent quality, our 'Best Quality' preset), 23 (good quality, default for many encoders), 26 (our 'Best Balance' preset), 32 (our 'Smallest File' preset), 36+ (very low quality). Lower CRF = better quality but larger files.
Bitrate Settings
Bitrate determines the amount of data per second. For 1080p video: 8-12 Mbps for high quality, 5-8 Mbps for good quality, 2-5 Mbps for acceptable quality. For 720p: 5-8 Mbps high, 3-5 Mbps good, 1-3 Mbps acceptable. For 480p: 2-4 Mbps high, 1-2 Mbps good. Our Auto mode calculates bitrate automatically based on target file size.
Resolution Settings
Resolution affects both quality and file size. Common resolutions: 4K (3840x2160), 1080p (1920x1080), 720p (1280x720), 480p (854x480), 360p (640x360). Reducing resolution from 1080p to 720p reduces file size by 40-50%. For most online sharing, 720p or 1080p is sufficient. For email and messaging, 480p may be acceptable.
Frame Rate Settings
Frame rate (fps) affects smoothness of motion. Common frame rates: 60fps (gaming, sports), 30fps (standard video), 24fps (cinematic). Reducing from 60fps to 30fps reduces file size by 30-40%. For most content, 30fps is sufficient. For fast-motion content like gaming, keep 60fps if file size allows.
Audio Settings
Audio typically uses 10-20% of total file size. Common audio bitrates: 320kbps (high quality), 192kbps (good quality), 128kbps (standard), 96kbps (low quality), 64kbps (very low). For most videos, 128kbps AAC audio is sufficient. For music-heavy content, use 192-320kbps. If audio is not important, muting can save 10-20% of file size.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the best CRF value for video compression?
CRF 20-23 provides excellent quality with reasonable file sizes. CRF 26 is a good balance for most use cases. CRF 32+ is for maximum compression when quality is less important.
What bitrate should I use for 1080p video?
For 1080p video, use 8-12 Mbps for high quality, 5-8 Mbps for good quality, or 2-5 Mbps for acceptable quality. Our Auto mode calculates bitrate based on target file size.
Should I use H.264 or H.265?
H.264 is recommended for maximum compatibility. H.265 offers 25-50% better compression but has limited browser support. Our tool defaults to H.264.
What frame rate is best for video?
30fps is standard for most video content. 60fps is better for gaming and sports. 24fps gives a cinematic look. Reducing frame rate reduces file size.
